How Long Does Coronavirus Live on Surfaces

This was the investigation that launched the USA-eVote section on the Coronavirus. I was asked to print a simple list of the life expectancy of the coronavirus on various surfaces. I was rather shocked at the information I had to weed through before finding one site with a simple list of surfaces and the life expectancy of a virus on that surface. There was of course the general list of fake new sites. And there were some reliable websites. Some of which had information you had to possess a PhD to understand. Finally I found one website with the information I was looking for.

How long the coronavirus can survive on surfaces

The researchers compared the new coronavirus’ life span on surfaces with that of the SARS coronavirus in a 70-degree Fahrenheit room at 40% relative humidity. They found that both coronaviruses lived the longest on stainless steel and polypropylene, a type of plastic used in everything from food-storage containers to toys. Both viruses lasted up to three days on plastic, and the new coronavirus lasted up to three days on steel.

https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-lifespan-on-surfaces-graphic-2020-3

I prefer this site not because it is the most reliable, but because it took some rather complicated information from one website and took the time to put into in everyday English and a graph the average person can understand.

Following is a list of other useful web pages with more details and as I like, the subject explained from different angles.

WHO is continuously monitoring and responding to this outbreak. This Q&A will be updated as more is known about COVID-19, how it spreads and how it is affecting people worldwide. For more information, check back regularly on WHO’s coronavirus pages. https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019

“The good thing about COVID-19 is that it does not require any unique cleaning chemicals to disinfect hands and surfaces,” says Andrew Janowski, an infectious disease expert at Washington University School of Medicine and St. Louis Children’s Hospital. COVID-19 is the disease caused by the current coronavirus.

Good old-fashioned soap and water does the trick.

The virus was more stable on plastic and stainless steel than cardboard,” said Todd Green, Ph.D., a virologist and an associate professor in UAB’s Department of Microbiology. “Viable virus was detected for up to three days on plastic and stainless-steel surfaces. While on copper, no viable virus was measured after four hours or on cardboard after 24 hours.”

https://www.uab.edu/news/youcanuse/item/11213-how-long-does-the-novel-coronavirus-live-on-different-surfaces

The coronavirus can live for hours to days on surfaces like countertops and doorknobs. How long it survives depends on the material the surface is made from.

Here’s a guide to how long coronaviruses — the family of viruses that includes the one that causes COVID-19 — can live on some of the surfaces you probably touch on a daily basis. Keep in mind that researchers still have a lot to learn about the new coronavirus that causes COVID-19. For example, they don’t know whether exposure to heat, cold, or sunlight affects how long it lives on surfaces.

COVID-19 Early Prison Release

There seems to be a growing controversy surrounding early prison release in the light of the coronavirus crisis. Investigating this particular issue has been quite interesting. One view presents a number of arguments that appear logical on the surface, but is filled with holes the moment we consider scientific studies on prison release and other related subjects.

Several conservative groups—including FreedomWorks, Americans for Prosperity, and the Justice Action Network—urged President Trump in a letter today to announce an executive order “making clear that elderly, non-violent prisoners who have served 2/3 of their time should be transferred to home confinement as soon as possible.”

“Given the risk of Coronavirus sweeping through prisons like a fire in a dry barn, impacting corrections officers and their surrounding communities, it’s time to take the First Step Act one small step further,” the groups said.

Many of those same groups joined the American Civil Liberties Union, the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, the Sentencing Project, and other criminal justice organizations in a letter advising Trump to commute the sentences of federal inmates who are terminally or chronically ill, or have underlying medical conditions that put them at greater risk of serious complications from COVID-19.

https://reason.com/2020/03/24/advocates-and-lawmakers-urge-trump-administration-to-release-elderly-inmates-vulnerable-to-coronavirus/

Our first task is to consider the source. This particular website, Reason.com.

Founded in 1968, Reason is the nation’s leading libertarian magazine. We produce hard-hitting independent journalism on civil liberties, politics, technology, culture, policy, and commerce. As the magazine of free minds and free markets, Reason exists outside of the left/right echo chamber. Our goal is to deliver fresh, unbiased information and insights to our readers, viewers, and listeners every day.

https://reason.com/about/

Reason.com is basically a socialist funded website claiming to be unbiased. A quick look at the articles on that website shows a rather socialist agenda. When we look at the special interest groups demanding a nationwide prison release, we see some rather radical names. The ACLU has a long history of playing both sides of the fence. One day they will call for Federal control of issues like this national release of prisoners. As soon as the federal government responds, the ACLU will file lawsuits in every state suing the federal government for doing what the ACLU and its offshoot agencies demanded the federal government to do. It is a never ending cycle designed to raise unlimited funds. Those funds of course are provided by taxpayers.

The logical second step is to consider other sources. Sources websites like Reason.com should have researched before posting such a one sided article. Those well funded groups calling for prison release should have investigated the facts before writing and signing a letter to the President. President Trump is a very busy man and should not be distracted by such one sided, ill prepared comments and demands such as this. In short, this in one example showing how special interest groups claiming concern for the interests and well being of Americans is in fact attacking the President and the United States as a whole. The socialist agenda is well planned, well funded, and has more than enough resources to launch attacks from almost unlimited directions. Following a few simple rules to investigate such claims can and will reveal the source, and unmask the real intent. In this case, the source is a socialist group. Of course the ultimate plan is to weaken the United States and open the door for a socialist government. You don’t have be a prophet to show where this plan is leading.

As we’ve already brought to light. Special interest groups are poised and ready to file lawsuits against the federal government the moment any person is harmed by that early prisoner release. But the plans go far deeper. At the very moment special interest groups are suggesting nation wide prison releases, members of Congress are pushing through a bill to tax and control firearms on the federal level.

SEC. 803. INCREASE IN EXCISE TAXES RELATING TO FIREARMS.

(a) In General.—Section 4181 of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 is amended to read as follows:

SEC. 4181. IMPOSITION OF TAX.

There is hereby imposed upon the sale by the manufacturer, producer, or importer of the following articles a tax equivalent to the specified percent of the price for which so sold:

(1) Articles taxable at 30 percent:

(A) Pistols.

(B) Revolvers.

(C) Firearms (other than pistols and revolvers).

(D) Any lower frame or receiver for a firearm, whether for a semiautomatic pistol, rifle, or shotgun that is designed to accommodate interchangeable upper receivers.

(2) Articles taxable at 50 percent: Shells and cartridges.”.

https://www.congress.gov/bill/116th-congress/house-bill/5717/text

What do we have when we put the two scenarios together? We have prisoners released into a society unable to defend itself. At the very least, the ability to defend oneself will be severely restricted.

Individual states are allowed to establish their own laws regarding early prison release and firearms. There is no reason for the federal government to take control of either. No President is able to gather all the information on all the criminals across the nation to make an informed decision. The only thing a federal law ordering the release of millions of people in prison will accomplish is to open the door to thousands of lawsuits. The only winners will be lawyers. And of course those special interest groups who signed that letter to the President stand to make billions of dollars. Socialists special interest groups are also pushing for stricter gun control and registration. That is one detail socialist need in place before taking control of the government.

The people calling for early prison release have criticized the President for not relying on available scientific studies on the coronavirus. They never name those studies because they do not exist at this time. Here is an example of the critics ignoring scientific studies that do exist. Follow is one study published in 2007.

The U.S. population of former prison inmates is large and growing. The period immediately after release may be challenging for former inmates and may involve substantial health risks. We studied the risk of death among former inmates soon after their release from Washington State prisons.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2836121/

Based on the information in that article, the same special interest groups demanding the immediate release of millions of prisoners today was calling for additional federal funds to finance assistance programs for prisoners over the past 13 years. So which side of the fence is the correct side today?

That article on an official government websites contains a host of links to other studies about infectious diseases in prisons, plans to deal with infectious diseases, and links to other studies. That information is unbiased, But has been omitted from other sites claiming to be unbiased.

USA-eVote thrives to be unbiased. We strive to provide links to reliable sources of information. Our goal is to help people investigate important issues. But yes, when it comes to socialism, USA-eVote does take an active stand against socialism, communism, and other threats against the United States and its people. We are not ashamed of that role.

The Katyn Massacre

After the Soviets invaded Poland on September 17, 1940, what transpired was something very similar to what transpired in Western Poland: death, torture, imprisonment, starvation, etc. What makes the Soviet invasion stand out in a way that even the Warsaw Ghetto can’t, is one of the largest mass shootings in history: The Katyn Massacre.

Now, the Katyn Massacre is the term referring to the mass execution of Poles throughout the Soviet Ukraine and Belarus republics. The mass burial was in the Katyn forest.

But a bit of background, first. At the end of WWI, Poland finally became an independent country. Then, in 1921, the Poland, Soviet Union, and Ukraine signed the Treaty of Riga, which effectively established an Eastern Polish boarder, separate from Soviet Russia. As one can probably guess, the Soviet Union were quite angered by the loss of their occupied land, and were already planning their expansion West back into Poland. This, long before WW2 was on anyone’s mind. Even then, a pact was signed in 1932, the Polish-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact. Of course, at this point, we’re fully aware of how non-binding Non-Aggression Pacts actually are. The Soviet Union felt no more need to abide by them than the Nazis did. The Pact promised that if one of the countries should be attacked, the other would not help the aggressor. Of course, when Poland was invaded on September 1, 1939, the Soviet Union moved forward 16 days later to also invade Poland.

After the Soviet invasion of Poland, on September 26th,  Germany and the Soviet Union officially divided up Poland, a land that didn’t even belong to them. After this division, the NKVD and the Gestapo coordinated their efforts, or rather, their atrocities.

A mere two days after their invasion, the NKVD created the Directorate of Prisoners of War, effectively taking into custody “Polish prisoners from the Army” and “organizing a network of reception centers and transfer camps and arranging rail transport to the western USSR” (Source). In other words, on both sides of the division line, Poles were being sent to concentration camps for the mere reason that they were Polish.

The camps, located in former monasteries now converted into prison camps, were located in Kozelsk, Starobeisk, and Ostashkov. While here, between October and February, the Poles were subjected to intense interrogations as well as relentless political agitation.

[Below: Katyn Massacre]

80 rocznica rozkazu o zbrodni katyńskiej wieszwiecej - tvp.info

During the days of April and May in 1940, the Poles who were interned in the Soviet concentration camps, were transferred amongst three separate execution sites. Those interned at Kharkov were sent to Piatykhatky on April 5th. At night, groups of Poles were shot in the basement of the NKVD headquarters. By May 12th, 3,840 citizens had been killed in Piatykhatky. Those Poles interned Kalinin were transferred to Miednoye on April 4, 1940. There, some 6,311 Poles were shot in the basement of the NKVD headquarters, between April 4 and May 22. It is important to remember, here, that “the territory of Miednoye cemetery has never belonged to Germany” (Source). Lastly, those interned in Smolensk were transferred to Katyn by cattle cars. Like with the other execution sites, they were shot in the basement of the NKVD headquarters and then transferred to the forest. By May 11th, 4,421 Polish citizens had been executed in Katyn. Of the 250,000 Polish citizens who were taken prisoner (15,000 of whom were officers, police, and gendarmerie) only 395 managed to survive. In total.

In the meantime, other officers, clerks, judges, prosecutors, political prisoners, and social activists were kept in Western Ukraine and Western Belarusia. Here, 7,300 Poles were murdered while another 1,980 were killed in Bykivnia (near Kiev), and up to 200,000 more were murdered and buried in mass graves in the Kuropaty Forest.

The list really is endless. The Soviets, like the Germans, killed anyone who might be a threat to the sate: doctors, lawyers, teachers, engineers, industrialists, scholars, writers, librarians, on and on the list goes. Of these, it is believed that up to 327,000 Poles were deported, mostly to Soviet camps.

All of this went unknown until April 13, 1943, when Germans drew attention to the killing fields. The Soviets – being the dishonest Communists that they are – told the world that the Nazis were responsible for these deaths. And even today, people chose to believe this. While the Nazis aren’t exactly known to be truthful and honest, to automatically assume the verity of the Soviet claims is, well, a bit asinine. And even if, for probably political reasons, one was to believe the Russian lies, it still calls into question why, exactly, they were holding tens – if not hundreds – of thousands of Poles in camps in Russia.

On the part of the US and British governments, well, they know full-well who was to blame for the mass killing of the Poles, (both, in all reality). But the culprit of the Katyn Massacre was the NKVD, and the Allied governments knew this, but acknowledging this could make whatever negotiations between them and the Soviet Union only less likely than they currently were. Remember that negotiating with Stalin was no easy task to begin with. The lie was carried on to the Nuremberg Trials, were Stalin and the Soviets attempted to hang German war criminals for the death of 11,000 Polish officers at Katyn. However, the evidence of this was so disputable that it wasn’t even included in the final documents. Yet, despite these obvious facts, people today still claim that the Germans were responsible for the Katyn Massacre.

What is COVID-19

There has been a lot of speculation about COVID-19 also known as the coronavirus. One of the main questions is, where did it come from?

COVID-19 appeared in Wuhan, a city in China, in December 2019. Although health officials are still tracing the exact source of this new coronavirus, early hypotheses thought it may be linked to a seafood market in Wuhan, China. Some people who visited the market developed viral pneumonia caused by the new coronavirus. A study that came out on Jan. 25, 2020, notes that the individual with the first reported case became ill on Dec. 1, 2019, and had no link to the seafood market. Investigations are ongoing as to how this virus originated and spread.

https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/coronavirus

For all practical intents and purposes, USA-eVote will use official government sources when available. At the beginning of our research we encountered a number of sites passing along false, misleading, and sometimes harmful information. One example is a website encouraging people to mix bleach with other chemicals to produce a homemade disinfectant cleaner. Although those concoctions would most likely kill the COVID-19 virus and most other viruses, mixing bleach with other chemicals is dangerous, sometimes explosive, and most often produces vapors far more dangerous than the COVID-19 virus itself.

There has also been a lot of fake news spreading over the Internet about the origin of COVID-19. Here is one example showing how information gathered from even the best sources is either misunderstood or intentionally altered.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) are two highly transmissible and pathogenic viruses that emerged in humans at the beginning of the 21st century. Both viruses likely originated in bats, and genetically diverse coronaviruses that are related to SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV were discovered in bats worldwide. In this Review, we summarize the current knowledge on the origin and evolution of these two pathogenic coronaviruses and discuss their receptor usage; we also highlight the diversity and potential of spillover of bat-borne coronaviruses, as evidenced by the recent spillover of swine acute diarrhoea syndrome coronavirus (SADS-CoV) to pigs.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30531947

As you can see, people take news, reports, and papers on other viruses and randomly misapply them to COVID-19. In this example information on SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV was randomly applied to COVID-19 with no scientific evidence.

The articles in this book as well as those posted on USA-eVote.com are geared for the average reader interested in additional research. At this point, the first week in April, 2020, not much is really known about COVID-19. We are still in the early stages of research. And the way that information is shared is often in question. Links are provided here so the average reader is able to go beyond the information USA-eVote was able to gather when these articles were written and posted.

On a personal note, I had to ask what a coronavirus was. I had a feeling it wasn’t the flu. And if it was, why was the whole world panicking over the flu? I did my first research by looking up coronavirus on the Internet.

Coronaviruses were first discovered in the 1930s when an acute respiratory infection of domesticated chickens was shown to be caused by infectious bronchitis virus (IBV). In the 1940s, two more animal coronaviruses, mouse hepatitis virus (MHV) and transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV), were isolated.[8]

Human coronaviruses were discovered in the 1960s.[9] The earliest ones studied were from human patients with the common cold, which were later named human coronavirus 229E and human coronavirus OC43.[10] Other human coronaviruses have since been identified, including SARS-CoV in 2003, HCoV NL63 in 2004, HKU1 in 2005, MERS-CoV in 2012, and SARS-CoV-2 in 2019. Most of these have involved serious respiratory tract infections.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coronavirus

When I first read that information on March 15th, I was convinced the world was going crazy over a common cold and somehow fake news was responsible for causing worldwide panic. Based on that we’ve seen fake news accomplish in the past, that was a viable concept to consider. No one had any reliable studies, research, or sources to turn to for information. I could see how the world was suddenly divided into two classes. One class instantly gave into fear and panic that resulted in hoarding. Of all things, toilet paper was the first product to disappear from store shelves. At least in the cities where fear ruled the streets. Out in the country in small towns it was life as usual for the first week or two. People were stocking up just in case, but for the most part people outside the cities were taking the crisis in a rather calm manner. Then facts began to suffer.

In the beginning President Trump had no choice but to go with the best information available. In the beginning it was unclear what we were dealing with. Some people thought it was just another cold or flu variation while others though it was a plague leading to the end of the world. On Friday the 13th all the churches across the US announced they were closing. Which lead to a series of new speculations. Almost a month later nut cases and conspiracy freaks are spreading rumors about state and federal orders that closed all churches. Nothing could be further from the truth. I have not located a single national news article about church and school closings. But the Internet has hundreds of links to local news agencies announcing local school and church closings between March 12th to the 14th. Which shows beyond any shadow of doubt that the decision was up to individual schools and churches. Of course we have seen a fair share of religious fanatics claiming church closings show a lack of faith. But evidence released a few days later showed closing churches was a wise decision saving countless lives.

As a side note here, earlier this week I was up until 3AM on social media conversing with a number of people claiming to be pastors and claiming President Trump personally closed down their church. After asking those pastors a few simple questions like, how many Testaments are there in the Bible, how many Gospels are in the Bible, and what method they use to study the Bible, I found not one of those preachers were able to answer the simplest question every Christian should know. After waking up the next day I realized the time I was messaging those preachers. It was 3AM Chicago time in the US. Those preachers claiming President Trump closed down their churches were overseas. They were running a scam asking for funds. They were most likely not Christians. Their profile was incomplete and only 1-2 days old. I will have to add a scam warning section to the USA-eVote.com website.

As time went by, useful information was hitting the Internet. I have friends I can trust in other parts of the world where information comes a lot quicker and does not face the fake news issues we have in the US. One of the most important articles I was given was a voice message from a woman with some sound advice. She warned about the effects of the virus. This particular strain contains some sort of chemical agent what acts like a hardening agent for the mucus in lungs produced by every general virus of this type. There was also a video link provided where one recovering patient described the symptoms and described the feeling in the lungs as if the mucus was hardening into a glass like substance. That video seems to have disappeared. But here are a few other sources.

It first struck me how different it was when I saw my first coronavirus patient go bad. I was like, Holy shit, this is not the flu. Watching this relatively young guy, gasping for air, pink frothy secretions coming out of his tube and out of his mouth. The ventilator should have been doing the work of breathing but he was still gasping for air, moving his mouth, moving his body, struggling. We had to restrain him. With all the coronavirus patients, we’ve had to restrain them. They really hyperventilate, really struggle to breathe. When you’re in that mindstate of struggling to breathe and delirious with fever, you don’t know when someone is trying to help you, so you’ll try to rip the breathing tube out because you feel it is choking you, but you are drowning.”

It seems rather strange to see individuals releasing more information than the government itself. One on hand President Trump has to handle this situation with care. We all know President Trump has a habit of shooting from the hip. This crisis is serious enough for President Trump to step back and reconstruct his approach. That is how serious this situation is. We are in a war with an invisible enemy. We need to approach all outside activity with care, common sense, and discretion, With what we know so far, this virus is wicked. It can and has killed. Since it is related to the cold virus there is no cure for it. The only way to defeat this virus is to STOP it from spreading. That requires measures, sacrifices by all of us. One stupid move by a single person places dozens or hundreds of people at risk. The best advice we can give at this time is to say home and stay safe.
