The phrase became popular with the 1943 song bearing that name. Is there really any surprise that it originated with WWII?

The song tells the story of a bomber plane destroyed in combat. The plane has “one motor gone” but the “full crew aboard” and is making a landing with nothing more than a wing and a prayer – and our trust in the Lord.
