In 1939, President Roosevelt declared that Thanksgiving would be a week early to give people more time to do their Christmas shopping. Unfortunately, this only angered a whole lot of people. What resulted was some states declaring that they would still celebrate Thanksgiving on the last Thursday of the month. Despite the ensuing dispute, Roosevelt celebrated Thanksgiving on the 3rd Thursday of November in 1940 & 1941.
